We use heavy gauge wire in class, and students make all sorts of components and pieces to use in jewelry designs.<br /><br />Here is a quick project for you to try...<br /><br /><strong>Materials Needed:</strong><br /><br /><ul><li>14 gauge sterling silver wire, dead soft. About 18"</li><br /><li>an assortment of freshwater pearls 6-8mm</li><br /><li>headpins</li><br /><li>daisy spacers or other small spacers to enhance drops</li><br /><li>Round nose <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">plier</span></li><br /><li>Flat nose <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">plier</span></li><br /><li>Wire Cutters</li></ul><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/Newsletter%20010.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br />The necklace is made in 4 sections.<br /><br />The bottom is a 3" piece of wire, looped at each end. About 20 freshwater pearls are <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">individually</span> wire wrapped and slid onto the wire to form a free-floating cluster.<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/Newsletter%20008.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br />The sides are about 6" each, curved in slight "C" shape and looped at each end.<br /><br /><br /><br /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/Newsletter%20009.jpg" border="0" /> The back is made up of several pieces.<strong> A hook</strong> (Cut 1 1/2' of wire. Use round nose pliers to make the loop on one end and the curve of the hook on the other.) <strong>6 figure "8" pieces</strong> and a <strong>wire wrapped dangle</strong>. Two figure "8" components connect the center to the side wires. (For the "8" components, cut an inch or so of wire and loop each end in the opposite direction. Adjust the loop sizes according to how much wire you have cut. The top and bottom loops do not have to be the same size.<br /><br />I make all of the individual components first, and then assemble them together. Lengthen if needed by adding more figure "8" pieces.<br /><br /><p>Good Luck! </p>Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-42886699099994109302008-01-06T11:39:00.000-08:002008-01-06T12:18:47.860-08:00Treasure your Memories...Christine and I were proofreading the class schedule yesterday(Feb-May 2008) in preparation for the printer. We realized that I had not scheduled any classes for the first weekend of February. <div><br /></div><div>I quickly fixed that problem and added two...two of my very favorites...</div><div><br /></div><div><strong>Saturday, February 2, 10-5 Treasure Necklace.<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/Kate%20Treasure%20Necklace.gif" border="0" /></strong> Some of you may have seen this necklace as I like to pull it out during certain classes to demonstrate various techniques like wire wrapping or adding chain to pieces, or color palleting. I have not taught this class in a while (perhaps during the whole Beadissimo 5 years). But I used to teach it quite regularly at national shows like Bead and Button. The one pictured above is my personal piece. It has a variety of charms, rings, beads and other mementos that I've collected over the years. This is a perfect piece to showcase your own treasures. (Sorry about the funny picture, I couldn't remove the background)</div><div><br /></div><div><strong>Sunday, February 3, 10-4 Picture Pendants.<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2005/picture_pendant.jpg" border="0" /></strong> This is a good one...I had a student spontaneously yell out during class "This is like CAMP!" THis class is fun. Bring photos of loved ones, or scenery, or random bits of paper that you have been saving and put them between two pieces of glass, solder the edges...and presto...Pendant!</div><br /><br />Both classes are for all levels and are $95 each. <div><br />Sign-ups begin Saturday January 19th at 10 AM. (Preview is the night before, Friday 6-9). </div><div><br />I an really looking forward to these classes...check your schedule and spend the weekend creating memories.</div><div></div><div>Kate</div>Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-4166457720221914802008-01-02T08:51:00.000-08:002008-01-02T09:22:11.406-08:00Kate on DIY Craft Lab<a href="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/kate&jen.JPG"><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/photos/2007/kate&jen.JPG" border="0" /></a> Check out Kate on DIY Craft Lab. In honor of the Fused Glass Trunk Show the demos were setting fused glass in metal and PMC. If you missed the show, Weir Glass will be back in late February for another Trunk Show.<br /><br />The first demo focused on using PMC3 with fused glass. More on that demo in a future post. However, for those of you who were at the demo and wondering how the piece turned out, it did survive the kiln firing and looks great.<br /><br />The second demo was about using fused glass as a setting in sheet silver. The steps are outlined below and include bonus "after" photos of soldering and setting the piece in a ring.<br /><strong></strong><br /><a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_11.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 171px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 115px" height="126" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_11.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><strong>Step 1:</strong> Choose the piece to be set and measure the thin bezel strip <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_1.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 179px; CURSOR: hand" height="133" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_1.jpg" border="0" /></a>(28 gauge) around the setting. The strip should fit snugly around the stone. Solder bezel closed using hard solder.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong><a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_4.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 163px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 120px" height="149" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_4.jpg" border="0" /></a></strong><br /><strong>Step 2:</strong> Solder the bezel strip to the <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_2.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 173px; CURSOR: hand" height="129" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_2.jpg" border="0" /></a>backing of the setting using medium solder. Here I used 22 gauge sterling sheet cut to a circle using a disc cutter. Check the solder join all around to make sure that the piece is completely soldered to the plate. If there are gaps, lightly tap them flush with a rawhide hammer to close and resolder.<br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong>Step 3:</strong> Cut a <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_6.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_6.jpg" border="0" /></a>ring band from 18 gauge ring stock and size to fit. Close join using medium solder from the inside of the band and draw it through the seam using the torch.<br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong>Step 4:</strong> Even the ring band by using a flat file and filing on both edges.<a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_8.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_8.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong>Step 5:</strong> Solder finished bezel to ring band <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_10.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 160px; CURSOR: hand" height="117" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_10.jpg" border="0" /></a>using easy solder.<br /><a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_9.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_9.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong></strong><br /><strong>Step 6:</strong> File and polish ring and set stone. <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_13.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_13.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_12.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_12.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The ring is ready to wear.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_14.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/bezel_set_14.jpg" border="0" /></a>Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-69783687564758800392007-06-21T16:32:00.000-07:002007-06-21T16:42:38.104-07:00Can I Just Say...<img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://beadissimo.com/web/images/stories/class_pics/seed_bead_cuff_1.jpg" border="0" />...that I really like peyote stitch, says <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;id=94&Itemid=47">Kate</a>...<br />Pictured at right is the Peyote Stitch Cuff. Hope to see you at the show.</div>Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-65748070692406669312007-06-21T16:26:00.001-07:002007-06-21T16:44:10.050-07:00Kate Teaches at Beaducation<a href="http://www.beaducation.com/classes/images/kate.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beaducation.com/classes/images/kate.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>Have you always wanted to take a PMC class but do not have the time or live too far away to travel? Now Kate's PMC class is as near as your computer screen.<br />Back in late 2006 Kate filmed one of her most popular classes <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=87&Itemid=44">Introduction to PMC</a> for <a href="http://www.beaducation.com/classes/?p=detail&id=11">Beaducation</a>, an on-line class website created by Wire Guru, Lisa Niven Kelly.<br />It was a fun class to film. We did it right here in our own classroom. It covers all of the basics that you need to work with PMC.<br />The website is now up and running and ready for you to check out. (And stay tuned...Beadissimo's own class video series is on the way! We'll keep you updated!)</div>Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-33743343162752658842007-06-21T16:21:00.000-07:002007-06-21T16:44:49.211-07:00Meet the Teachers<img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 129px; CURSOR: hand" height="156" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/meet%20the%20teachers%20email%202.jpg" border="0" />Beadissimo’s first Meet the Teachers event was held Friday evening May 11th. Thanks so much to all of the instructors and students who attended. You made it a really fun evening!<br /><br />Each customer who enrolled in the store that night received a $10 gift card towards merchandise at Beadissimo. We had cheese and wine (snacks are very important to us!) and all of the class samples were on display for students to look at and touch. Instructors <a href="http://www.nataliesjewels.com/">Natalie Cohen</a> (jewelry design), Colin Mahler (chain making), <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=94&Itemid=47">Sarah Caligiuri</a>, <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=94&Itemid=47">Karin Smith</a>, <a href="http://www.fullattention.com/">Heron Saline</a> and <a href="http://www.sabrajewelrydesign.com/about_Sabra_Jewelry_Designs.html">Yehuda Tassa</a>, (filigree), (pictured at left speaking with owner, Christine Griffith) were all in attendance.<br /><br />In the photo on the right, you can see Beadissimo sales associates and instructors Karin Smith <a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/meet%20the%20teachers_email_photo.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/meet%20the%20teachers_email_photo.jpg" border="0" /></a>(Pearl Knotting) and Sarah Caligiuri (Basic Stringing and Wire and Beads and Chain) chatting with instructor Heron Saline (Stone Magic). You can also spot a few of the great samples that were on display.<br /><br />Our next Meet the Teachers event will be scheduled for September. We'll post the dates soon so you can mark it on your calendar.Beadissimohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05181536459797508290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4722618766533466175.post-73108349727002935852007-06-21T16:16:00.000-07:002007-06-21T16:21:17.281-07:00Classes Summer 2007<a href="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/etching_lrg.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 278px; CURSOR: hand" height="186" alt="" src="http://www.beadissimo.com/photos/2007/etching_lrg.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>Check out the new classes for June-September 2007.
